At FIPA, we’re in the process of winding down a very busy and eventful 2012. The past twelve months have been marked by major victories, as well as new challenges on the transparency and information rights front.
We’re very pleased to have finally succeeded in our efforts to obtain an unredacted copy of the B.C. Government’s $300 million Workplace Services Agreement with IBM, and are looking forward to the results of two investigations launched by the Information and Privacy Commissioner in response to complaints and research prepared by FIPA and its allies. We’re also keeping a close eye on a number of troubling access and privacy rollbacks that were hastily pushed through the legislature this summer, along with attempts to expand state surveillance powers at the federal level through bills like C-12 and C-30.
In 2012, we also saw some exciting growth in our community. We’ve welcomed a number of new members and donors, and are excited to initiate a number of new projects in the New Year. We’ll be introducing new educational programming, developing unique research projects, and pursuing innovative community partnerships.
To keep pace with these initiatives, we’ve also introduced a new way to support FIPA: monthly donations. For a minimum monthly contribution of $5.00, you can become an ally of one of B.C. most resilient civil society communities. Signing up is simple, secure, and fast. Just visit our donation page and select “Monthly” from the frequency drop-down menu. It’s a low-cost, low-maintenance way to support FIPA in its efforts to defend and advance the information rights of Canadians.
FIPA would like to extend its sincere thanks to all of those individuals and organizations who continue to generously support our work. We rely on your generosity to deliver programming and stay on the forefront of critical information issues. And we would especially like to acknowledge the support of the Law Foundation of British Columbia and the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch, whose funding makes our work possible.
Happy holidays to everyone from the team at FIPA. We look forward to working with you all in the New Year!
