With the start of Canada’s Federal Election campaign, the Freedom of Information and Privacy Association (FIPA) has released their 2021 FIPA Election Guide.
Taking place during the Covid-19 pandemic, this election will be different from previous ones. “The Pandemic highlighted many long-standing issues in accessing information from public bodies at all levels and in protecting peoples privacy.” according to FIPA President, Mike Larsen. “FIPA encourages everyone to get involved in the election and make your voice heard, while following all public health guidelines and directives.”
The guide provides election information, questions members of the public can ask candidates, and background on how political parties are to respect the public’s privacy and access to information in this election.
In addition, FIPA will be asking Canada’s main federal parties some pointed questions about their views on key information and privacy issues. We will share the responses with our community and the general public. Keep an eye out for updates from us.
FIPA’s priorities focus on four key areas:
Privacy – Protecting your information from being used without your consent.
Transparency – Providing access to government information and decisions.
A public record – Maintaining access to information now and into the future.
Whistleblower Protection – Ensuring protection when reporting bad actions.
