FIPA is pleased to join an outstanding roster of civil society, advocacy, and media organizations at Media Democracy Days 2012, one of this year’s Info Summit community partners. Since 2001, MDD has brought artists, activist, academics, students, researchers, journalists, and citizens together in dialogue on issues of representation, information policy, and technology. This year’s gathering takes place over two days on November 2nd and 3rd.
FIPA will be on-site November 3rd from 12 PM-5 PM at the Central Library (350 West Georgia), running an information table in the upper promenade with the BC Civil Liberties Association.
In addition to hosting a number of screenings, keynotes, and discussion sessions, this year MDD will also include two panel sessions of particular interest to the information rights community.
On November 3rd, catch one of our Information Summit keynote speakers Colin Bennett, along with Marie Della Mattia of NOW Communication and Mario Canseco of Angus Reid Polling, for “Big Data and Political Marketing,” a panel discussion examining how the technologies and practices of “big data” are combining forces with political parties to influence election outcomes. That session will take place from 1:15-2:45 PM, also at the Central Library.
At 3:00-4:30, join Lindsey Pinto of OpenMedia.ca, Micheal Vonn of the BC Civil Liberties Association and Runa Sandvick of US-based privacy project Tor for “Who’s Watching You? The Politics of Surveillance,” a panel session looking into emerging trends in online surveillance tactics and what citizens can do to protect their privacy rights.
The event is free but seating is limited. Full information is available at http://mediademocracyday.org
We hope to see you there!
