FIPA recently replied to an OIPC request that sought details on our experiences with application fees for general FOI requests.
In our response, we restated our ongoing concerns with the application fees and provided stories that illustrate these concerns. For example, we expressed concern that the fees were passed into law during the Special Committee’s time to review FIPPA, and rushed through despite considerable debate and opposition. We also point out the questionable rationale put forward by the Ministry of Citizen’s Services for the fee’s implementation.

There is overwhelming evidence and numerous reports that show the Government is best situated to improve the FOI system through better management. FIPA continues to see the Government, Ministry, and Minister deflect and deny accountability in addition to blaming those seeking information rather than their own mismanagement and bureaucracy.
