VolunteerWe Love Our Volunteers!

FIPA is a small, non-profit group, and we do a lot with our limited resources. If you have specific skills you would like to contribute to fight for information rights, take a look at the list of volunteer opportunities below and see if you might be the person we are looking for!

Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about our work, and gain valuable experience and understanding of the information rights landscape in Canada, and the diverse network of non-profits we are involved with. We ask that all potential volunteers become members of FIPA, and you can sign up as a member here.

Archiving: Collection evaluation & needs assessment

FIPA has a long and storied history, having worked as a leader in the field of information rights since 1991. We were the major force in getting BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act passed, and we are its main defender. This act has been called the most progressive legislation of its kind in the world.

We have an office full of historic court cases, documented events, campaigns, and research projects that we would love to properly archive so that it can be made available to the public.

If you have a background in archival, librarian, and/or information studies, and are skilled planning and implementing archival work, then we want to talk to you! This project will initially involve assessing the records and creating a plan for effective archival. If this sounds interesting to you, please send us an email with a summary of your experience and your resume to fipa@fipa.bc.ca.

Archiving: Records management, indexing, and classification

FIPA is in the process of making our work more available to the general public through the new library feature of our website. We need help with digitizing, uploading, summarizing, and categorizing the large number of records.

We are looking for a volunteer with excellent communication skills, a high level of familiarity with access to information and privacy issues, a good understanding of FIPA’s work, and experience using WordPress-based websites.

Ideally, volunteers should be willing to commit 8-10 hours a week during regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 9:30-5:30 pm), and willing to come to our office to work (West Broadway at Spruce Street).

If this sounds like you, please send us an email with a summary of your experience and your resume to fipa@fipa.bc.ca
