Bill 22 enables the government to charge you again to access information you already paid for once.
You already pay taxes. These support important government services, employees, and activities. Because your tax dollars are used, you have a quasi-constitutional right to know the information behind decisions that impact these services and activities with limited exceptions.
Bill 22 reduces your access to government information. Civil society is speaking against Bill. The independent Commissioner is critical of the Bill. Our law used to be one of the best in Canada. Bill 22 will erode government transparency and push us to a mediocre status at best. It is a Flip Flop for the party in power given where they stood in 2017. Yet this majority government continues to try and ram it through.
Transparency Matters to all of us.
Bill 22 opens the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act for substantive changes for the first time in over a decade. Unfortunately, if passed, this Bill will undermine access to information and make public bodies less transparent. It is a step backwards for openness and accountability, and a missed opportunity to improve the information rights of British Columbians.
