In late 2024, the Alberta Government introduced and quickly passed two bills that transformed Alberta’s framework for public-sector information and privacy law, replacing the existing Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act with the Protection of Privacy Act and the Access to Information Act. These new Acts include some significant shifts in rights, powers, and practice.
FIPA’s Alberta Legislative Changes event saw Commissioner Diane McLeod, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, present on the expected impacts from recent legislative changes, once in force. This was followed by a panel discussion facilitated by FIPA President Mike Larsen, with Lorne Randa of Brownlee LLP and Samantha Delechantos from Fasken LLP with subsequent questions and answers.
FIPA wishes to thank our funders at the Law Foundation of British Columbia, Kwantlen Polytechnic University Faculty of Art for the technical support and the Canadian Bar Association whose branches with privacy and access sections help make sense in the sector.
For legal and privacy professionals attending from BC it qualified as continuing professional development as a unique opportunity to engage on a topical subject with a leader in the field with a facilitated question and answer session.
