PMP Training FAQ

This course is essential for executives and managers who are responsible for collecting and protecting personal information and those appointed as Privacy Officers.

This course is also valuable for any person or organization that wants to increase their capacity and professional development in areas of Privacy and Privacy Management Programs.  

Every organization in Canada that collects personal information are expected to take reasonable steps to protect it. A privacy management program is seen as best practice and mandatory in some provinces for some organizations.

Effective February 1, 2023, under BC’s the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), Public bodies are now required to develop privacy management programs and report privacy breaches that could be expected to result in serious harm. 

The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) came into force on January 1, 2001 and applies to private-sector organizations across Canada that collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of commercial activity.

Unless your organization is federally regulated and required to comply with PIPEDA, organizations in Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec comply with provincial laws that govern the private sector for the collection, use or disclosure of personal information that occurs within their respective province.

Both for-profit organizations and non-profit organizations follow the same requirements to meet compliance. Non-profits are quite often surprised to find that they collect more personal information – and in many cases more sensitive personal information – than for-profit organizations. This is because they have more “data subjects” – or categories of people – that they collect information from.

FIPA has an agreement with ProDio Audio Learning Inc. to make this course available through their website and the ProDio mobile app, which is custom built for mobile audio learning, and will allow you instant access to download modules and learn on-the-go.  Their platform is seamlessly integrated so you can select or switch between the website and mobile app.

All course content, handouts, quizzes, and completion certificate are available through both the website and the ProDio mobile app.

Your individual certifying or governing body is best suited to answer this question. We have taken steps to seek preauthorization in some instances. On successful completion the course qualifies as:

• 3.5 CPD credits through the Law Society of British Columbia

Once purchased through the ProDio app or website, you gain access for one year to:

• 16 audio modules which run between 8 and 18 minutes each with supporting scripts and module summaries. The audio content has a total run time of just over 3 hours, 12 minutes.
• Over 40 supporting documents and templates that provide you the foundational materials to adapt and modify a privacy management program for your organization.
• A certificate on course completion for the individual completing the course.

The course is available for $300.

The course and modules were developed by industry practitioners and experts aligned to guidance from regulators and legislation.

The course is comprised of 16 modules which address the following learning outcomes:

Chapter 1 (modules 1-3)

• Understand the importance of a PMP.
• Understand the role of a Privacy Officer.
• Get organizational support and buy-in for your PMP.
• Understand the essential components of a PMP (Program Controls).

Chapter 2 (modules 4-7)

• Respond to access requests.
• Respond to requests to make changes to personal information.
• Address privacy questions, concerns, and complaints.

Chapter 3 (modules 8-11)

• Create the Personal Information Inventory.
• Establish sound privacy policies.
• Establish sound risk assessment tools.

Chapter 4 (modules 12-16)

• Set up and maintain an effective privacy training program.
• Contain and manage a privacy breach.
• Engage external service providers in your privacy program.
• Communicate your privacy management program externally.
• Create an ongoing oversight and review plan for your PMP.

The first version of core material was released in February of 2023.

Purchasers have access to the content for one year from the date of purchase through ProDio Audio Learning Inc.

Updates to the training by FIPA are based on the following cycles.

• A review and update of supporting example templates and documents is planned annually to ensure any revisions are adequately addressed.
• A review and update to the second version of core material is planned within two years.
• After that every 3-5 years— or when a major new privacy regulation or development has occurred — online training will be overhauled and re-released.
• Within the year of initial purchase, any updates are automatically integrated into the product and do not require an additional purchase.

Users will need to purchase annual updates to maintain access to the most current and newly updated content.

FIPA cannot guarantee indefinite access to online training through ProDio. Especially if a previous version of a training that has since been overhauled can no longer be maintained from a technical perspective. For questions, please contact us.

No. All material will be accessible through the ProDio website or mobile app.

HOWEVER:  Stricter workplace security protocols or firewalls may block ProDio audio content from streaming.  If you’re having difficulties on your work network, please contact your IT department to allow permission to access ProDio audio files and downloadable handouts.
