The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands is seeking a new Ward 2 councillor following the resignation of Mark Jamison, effective Dec. 31.
Council officially declared the position vacant on Jan. 13 and has opted for an open call for applicants to fill the seat.
Qualified residents are invited to apply by Feb. 10, the same day interviews will be conducted, and the new councillor will be appointed through a bylaw.
Township officials say this approach ensures inclusivity while keeping costs low – around $3,000 compared to $30,000–$40,000 for a byelection.
Applicants must provide proof of identity and residence, a Consent to Release Personal Information form, and a Declaration of Qualification form. They may also submit a one-page statement outlining their qualifications.
To submit, applicants must schedule an appointment with the township clerk.
The township emphasizes the importance of this role in shaping the community’s future. Interview questions will focus on applicants’ motivations, relevant experience, and their views on the key issues facing the municipality.
For more information or to obtain an application package, interested people can visit the township website or contact the clerk’s office at 613-659-2415 ext. 231 or clerk@townshipleeds.on.ca.
This process mirrors the 2023 appointment of Angela Kelman, who filled a vacancy after Deputy Mayor Gordon Ohlke’s passing.
Council aims to finalize the new appointment before training in March, with a special meeting possible to expedite the timeline.
