Calgary police have charged two adults and a youth in what they say was an extortion scheme that included threats for money and gunfire at a woman’s home, and they are asking the public to help find a man still wanted in the case.
Police say the woman started getting demands for money on March 25 through the messaging app WhatsApp. The messages came as texts and voice notes, and they carried repeated clear threats of violence.
Police say the senders knew private details about the woman. Those details included her full name, her home address, her business and information about her family.
About 12 hours after the first demand, someone fired a gun at the woman’s home before driving away, police say.
Investigators gathered evidence, including CCTV video from the area, and identified a suspect vehicle and several possible suspects.
On July 29, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy. Police say he helped pass messages between the woman and the people making threats. He was charged with one count of extortion, he has since been released. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice act.
On Tuesday, police arrested a woman they say gave out personal information that helped the suspects find and frighten the victim’s family. Kanureet Kaur, 23, of Chestermere, is charged with one count of extortion. She has been released and is set to appear in court on Oct. 6
Police are still looking for a third person, Tanveer Singh, 21, of Calgary, wanted on a warrant for possession of stolen property over $5,000, and police say the stolen vehicle was used during the shooting. He is described as 5-foot-8 and about 130 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
“While these charges are an important step, this investigation is far from over,” said CPS superintendent Jeff Bell. He said police continue to ask the public to help identify everyone involved.
Police say the case is part of a larger extortion series targeting Calgary’s South Asian community. There have been 51 extortion-related incidents reported in the city since April 2025, including 19 shootings, police say. Nineteen people have been charged with 59 offences in connection with these crimes.
