The Calgary Board of Education said it still cannot confirm how many families, students and staff have been impacted by the PowerSchool data breach that happened last December.
In an email to parents on Thursday morning, the school board said it is “working proactively with PowerSchool” and conducting an “internal investigation” to determine how many people have been impacted.
The CBE also said PowerSchool has contacted TransUnion and Experian to offer “two years of complimentary credit and identity protection and services for all students and educators whose information from our PowerSchool student information system was involved.” TransUnion will offer credit monitoring services for people who are 18 years and older while Experian will offer identity protection services for all involved students, educators and staff, the school board added.
“However, we do not have confirmation from PowerSchool about the number of CBE students and staff impacted nor clarification on what data may have been breached,” the email to parents read.
The update comes after an article published on BleepingComputer, an information security and technology news publication, on Wednesday claimed that 593,518 CBE students and 133,677 teachers were allegedly impacted by the PowerSchool breach.
LWC has not confirmed these numbers. The CBE said it could not confirm the numbers when LWC submitted an inquiry on Wednesday evening.
“We recognize there are other sources reporting information about what data may have been compromised. At this time we do not have confirmation from PowerSchool about the number of students and staff impacted and the details of the data taken,” said Joanne Anderson of the CBE’s media relations team.
“We remain committed to informing CBE families and staff on this matter and will do everything possible to provide accurate information to those impacted.”
