With the end of their term fast approaching, Vauxhall council has referred a funding request to upcoming budget deliberations.
During their regular Oct. 6 meeting, Vauxhall town council received a support request from the Vauxhall Ag Society Rodeo Grounds Committee.
According to the request, the committee is fundraising for and in the middle of constructing a multi-purpose Western Style building on the rodeo grounds, which is expected to cost between $300-350,000. While they are applying for and have received grants for the project, they are seeking sponsorship donations or investments to help raise the funds needed.
While there is an existing building on site used for concessions and storage, it is in need of serious repairs and updates and has become hazardous to those wishing to use the space. As such, it no longer works for their purposes. The new building would replace this, and features a loft at the top, stairs coming in from the outside, a deck, inside storage, office space, concession and kitchen, shelter area, and a gathering space for events.
The society had requested funding from council earlier in the year,
Coun. Russel Norris said council used to have a policy regarding donation requestions like this, and it would be a good thing for the next council to consider. With the municipal election taking place on Oct. 20, there is only one meeting remaining in this council term.
Mayor Kimberly Cawley suggested that they refer the matter to 2026 budget talks.
“I don’t think at this point, we’re really in a place where we can (commit),” said Cawley. “I do think if we commit any sort of funding (now), it won’t be significant.”
Based on the ag society’s plans, Cawley noted that it may draw some people away from the town’s facility for events like farmer’s markets, but overall, their rodeo events draw people into town.
Council passed a motion to receive the request for information.
