Two weeks after a cyberattack hit the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, officials still cannot say whether residents’ personal information was affected — even as most services have been restored.
The municipality detected the breach July 29 and immediately brought in external cybersecurity specialists to investigate. The incident was announced in a July 30 news release.
Most systems and services have since been restored, according to deputy chief administrative officer Kristin Colucci, though tax and utility billing have been slower to come back.
Officials say they are still working to determine the full scope of the incident, including whether any personal information was affected.
“As the investigation is ongoing, the municipality is unable to provide further details at this time,” Colucci says. “If the investigation determines that any personal information has been affected, appropriate steps will be taken in accordance with applicable privacy legislation.”
Billing delays
Property tax withdrawals and utility billing notices, both by mail and email, are normally processed on the last day of the month but have been delayed by the incident.
Municipal office staff are currently unable to provide account information, such as balances and account numbers.
Residents can still make payments online using a credit or debit card, and Colucci says tax and utility billing services are expected to resume early next week.
Investigation continues
The municipality has not said what caused the breach, which systems were initially affected or when the investigation will conclude.
“If we determine that personal information was affected, we will share that update and let residents know how to get more information,” Colucci says in the July 30 release.
