YORKTON — The City of Yorkton is reminding residents to be cautious after reports of scammers falsely claiming to represent municipal services and programs.
The warning comes after the city received reports of individuals posing as representatives of Yorkton’s water survey, offering prizes and attempting to gain access to residents’ homes.
City officials say the only official water survey is an online survey promoted through utility bill inserts. Neither city staff nor contractors are conducting door-to-door surveys or requesting entry into homes.
“The city cautions people to be vigilant when it comes to scammers,” said Erin Gulyas, communications manager for the City of Yorkton. “If you get a phone call, you can always verify it with the city through official channels, such as visiting our website or calling the city, to make sure that it is legitimate.”
In a separate incident, the Yorkton Fire Department has also been made aware of scam calls in which people falsely claim to represent the department while soliciting donations or requesting credit card and personal information.
The department stressed that Yorkton Fire Protective Services does not solicit donations or ask for financial information over the phone.
Residents who receive suspicious calls or visits are advised not to provide personal or financial information and to contact the city directly to verify any claims. Anyone who feels threatened or believes they have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact the Yorkton RCMP.
While urging caution, Gulyas said, “We really encourage participation in our upcoming initiatives,” adding that residents should confirm requests for information through official city channels if they have concerns about their legitimacy.
