At its regular meeting June 9, Northern Sunrise County council approved amendments to Policy 1.38 Generative Artificial Intelligence.
“The amendments support the County’s obligation under the new privacy legislation by strengthening requirements related to the protection of personal and confidential information,” explains Reeve Claude Rodrigue.
“It is important to ensure it remains aligned with evolving technology, legislative requirements and organizational needs.”
The changes were made in order to support NSC’s Privacy Management Program (PMP), as required under the Protection of Privacy Act. Administration explains the use and availability of artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve, include the introduction of AI-enabled wearable devices, smart glasses, mobile applications, and cloud-connected assistants.
“The County uses some AI technology as a productivity tool to support staff in completing administrative functions more efficiently, such as editing correspondence and reports, summarizing information and preparing communication tools,” says Rodrigue.
“This policy establishes clear requirements and expectations for the use of AI technologies when conducting County business,” he adds.
“This policy also reinforces compliance with the requirements under privacy legislation.”
The changes will also help strengthen privacy, security, and information requirements by reinforcing the protection of County information and personal information when using AI technologies. The updates, Rodrigue says, support the County’s PMP and will help ensure compliance with POPA, while allowing employees to responsibly leverage AI tools to improve efficiency and service delivery.
